episode 3

So before i get into it here are some quick observations/rants i have about this episode. Stella, shut it. Blayne is a creepster, do not try and force your catch phrases on Tim Gunn, "holla atch boi" ugh. someone is going to slap that tan off of him sooner or later, you can tell that he is getting on peoples nerves. Keith don't call Tim Gunn buddy. you have known the man for 2 days, and it's Tim Gunn . Did Luke Skywalker just start off calling yoda buddy? No. Would Gretzky do the same to Howe? Nope. You get my point. Tim also looked like he was little under the weather with a cold in this ep, wanted to make him chicken noodle soup. Last but not least, Suede, you need to work on the hair to gel ratio, and would it kill you to learn a pronoun or two?!

Onto the clothes! the designer got to go on a bus tour of the city and were dropped off at different places around the city armed with ponchos and digital cameras to find inspiration for the next project. unfortunately i could not find pictures of the pics each designer used for inspiration, i will keep an eye open and post them later if i find them.

Designer: Stella
Casey: I have a feeling this is exactly what all of her stuff is going to look like. it is deff her design point of view "hookah punk rock" and hey who knew she would opt to use leather. didn't see that coming did you? I like the snaps at the bottom of the jeans. not bad, but it will be if this is all she can produce, even though a lot of designers do tend to put out things that look alike this is more likely to get old quick.

Kayleigh: Wow. Didn't see this one coming. Okay though, so she's good at making tight fitting 'leatha' clothes. And vests. And lace-up everythings. And metal studs. And zippers. But why haven't the judges caught on yet? I don't for the life of me understand how she seems to slip under the radar when she's popping out the same outfit every week. One day I'm sure it'll catch up with her, but until then I look forward to the next annoying 'I'm rock n roll' moment from the queen of leather. But yeah, back to the outfit. I feel like Stella really lucked out with her model, she seems to pull off the look rather well; overall it works but I'm not impressed.

Designer:Leanne
I really reallllly liked this one. the picture doesn't do justice to the pretty detail and pleating in the skirt. it's clean , pretty, and still fresh looking. Has any one ever seen the movie the witches... witches planning to get rid of kids my making chocolate bars that turn them into mice...maybe? No? IMDB it. any who the shoes remind me of the movie bc one of the clues a creepy old lady is a witch is she will have squared feet or something like that. to the point, I'm not feeling the shoes, and will never take candy from strangers bc of that movie. even though the kid turned mouse totally pimped out his room with those crazy plastic tubes you could put onto hamster cages. this has gone on far to long and i am way off the point now. i like the skirt.

Kayleigh: I loved this one, and personally thought it should have been the winner. The overall look was great; you really can hardly tell it's a two piece outfit. I was a little afraid at first when I saw her working the semi-circles again... after last week it basically spelled trouble, but she's pulling ahead for me again as a designer.

Designer: Terri
Casey: the judges all liked this one so much more than i did, i just think it's too much fabric it kinda takes over, the sleeves are too long, i think it could have lost some length at the bottom and the sleeves needed to be downsized. the back is really nice, with the backless cut.

Kayleigh: I'm with Casey on this one... it didn't do as much for me as it did for the judges. It is an interesting concept for an outfit, and I feel like this one made Terri stand out a bit more, as she was blending into the scenery on the show until now. But, the pattern? Really? I feel like something so busy kind of detracted from the outfit because the top was so massive between the high neckline, long sleeves, and general length. But yeah, good for her.

Designer: Suede
Casey: I am fond of shirt dresses. but i tend to be more of a basic shape and tend to shy away from to much flair in clothes. i like the dress, I'd un-pop the collar and maybe tone down the bedazzler a bit, there is a lot of shine with the glitz, belt and shiny bits maybe a black belt instead of the gold one would have done it for me. but not bad suede, not bad.

Kayleigh: I didn't mind this, but Suede is so far a very hard designer to read. This is incredibly simple minus the bedazzler effect and gold accessories, but then when you look in relation to all the other outfits (um... Jerrell made a gown!?!) it seems pretty inadequate in terms of how much time it really looks like he put into it.

Designer: Joe
Casey: once again another i would like more minus some cheesy flair. i really like look of that gold kinda iridescent corset top .i think the thick black lines kill it a bit. i would have stopped the lines under the bust and i would ditch the dog collar. i like the kind of bustled skirt too.

Kayleigh: I thought this one really corresponded well to the photograph he took. The lines on the top were almost identical the lamppost he modeled it afterwards, so for me the design, although not my favorite, translated well for the challenge. The bling, however, I could do without. I am personally driven away by any garment that comes with jewelry or accessories already on it (with the exception of a belt here or there).

Designer: keith
Casey: i don't like this. too much white. would not do nice things to any one's shape, raggedy looking. meh.

Kayleigh: We focused a lot on Keith this episode, and his vision for this dress... It looks very reminiscent of a patchwork quilt in the planning stages, and I could have sworn I heard him tell Tim Gunn that he would fix the silhouette (which he DIDN'T!) I think this could have been cute if maybe he used the loose pattern for a corset-top, and then structured it a little bit more with maybe a pencil skirt, or even a poofy bottom. But that texture is too much for an entire dress. Waaaayyyy too much.

Designer: Kenley
Casey: the winning dress? the judges took to this piece much more than i thought they would. i thought nina would eat her alive. yes it is a different shape, and they do like volume in their garments i guess . but i don't think its flattering..the combo of the puffed sleeve and the high neckline is too much i think,, it kinda takes over her face and seems clustered i guess is the word I'm looking for. i like the ombred tulle that was a fun fabric and she worked it well to create the shape, but i don't think its flatters and the print is really loud. maybe if the dress was done in a less crazy print or in the same print but a simplified line and shape at the shoulders of neckline would have worked better. all of it together is too much excitement.

Kayleigh: Well, I didn't see this one coming as the winner. It's cute, I guess, but didn't they tease her about the silhouette at the beginning? The pattern doesn't do it for me at all, and I think she's damn lucky she had a girl who could pull off those colors. I don't get it, so many designers this season are going with patterns that remind me of seat covers in my aunt's summer home circa 1982.

Designer: Kelli
Casey: Hm. not my cup of tea, but it doesn't irk me like some of the others. the top is interesting, can't quite figure out if it was how she put it together or if its the fabric creates the top layer of the bodice, which intrigues me bc i can't pin point the craft behind it. the bottom layers of the bodice are actually really pretty the straps and bodice are a sheer kind of tulle maybe or softer fabric i really liked the look of it, but you cant see it under that stripey top layer, so once again i would have liked to see it simplified to see the more delicate pretty bits under all the crazy 'high fashion' (?) flair.

Kayleigh: Not too into it, but I do give her props. I think next to Jerrell, she's the only designer who displayed just HOW MUCH one can get done in the time they're allotted when the

Designer: Korto
casey: korto likes wide sleeves and pants in her designs. maybe it's the pic that doesn't show the detail, or maybe there just isn't any in the outfit. this was too simple, basic black and boring. not appalling but nothing to remember.

Kayleigh: Boring. Korto needs to go home.

Designer: Blayne
Casey: so if it weren't for last week's dress i would think that his design stance was just straight cooky and ugly. cookgly? uglooky? how he was not in the bottom 3 boggles my mind, it is basically the same dumb design as the one that got the boot. he likes to make a simple basic shape then ball up bits of things and just stitch it on top of it where ever it lands. what the heck? honestly there is no thought where things are placed, it does nothing for her body, its not pretty it''s not artsy, how is he still here?!

Kayleigh: So, Blayne stayed, but Emily left. Seriously? This is almost the same dress as hers, though I think Emily had more structure to it. Sigh.

Designer: Daniel
Casey: i kinda like this one. i think the waist could have been tailored a bit more to cinch in the waist, it would have made the details of the top vs the bottom pop , and would have really brought the composition of the dress together. if he could just fix those random bits that seem to be a bit off in each of his pieces ( waist here, last weeks hem..) he would totally up his a game, and could be a serious competitor, but it seems so far he is always a bit off or just a step behind a complete clean look.

Kayleigh: So, I have two things to say. 1) Daniel is always the sweaty, worried one. Always. He kind of looks like that guy at a store who's weaseling you out of money and he knows it. No poker-face. I don't trust him yet. and 2) draw a line down this picture at the middle, going up and down. Two different outfits much?

Designer: Jennifer
Casey: Dowdy. drab. matronly.

Kayleigh: Should. Have. Gone. Home.

Designer: Emily
Casey: So this was the losing outfit. Was it cliche? yeah. was it simple unappealing and circus meets senorita? yep. Asymmetric again...yeah. But I really think that if compared to Blayne's similar disaster it was the less of two evils. the ruffle thing was poorly place, unattractive and did nothing for the models shape. But Blayne's did the exact same thing only X2. I'm sad to see her go and was looking forward to seeing more out of her.

Kayleigh: I'm really bummed to see her go. I'm not a huge fan of the dress, but if you looked at what she'd done throughout the competition she was by far above the 'average' line. I do think she could have done cooler things with her photograph, but regardless I'll be keeping an eye out for her.

Designer: Jerrell
Casey: and way out from left field comes Jerrell. when this came down the runway i was like whoa, wait a min where did this come from. while everyone else were making tube tops with poorly placed ruffles , this guy made a gown! how he fell between the cracks of the editing room floor this episode confuses me. i love it when the designers make gowns! the length of the front it think could have used one more line of ruffle. but i laugh at the poorly scattered ruffles from the others scrambled over when this came out, how did he get all this done is the same amount of time. it was unexpected so i liked it.

Kayleigh: And Jerrell pulls forward into my list of 'yay' designers this season! Why didn't any cameraman pay attention to him this episode?! He's the man. And I think he deserved a little more attention for this one. Great job and application of the photograph, and great craftsmanship on this gown.

And now for my notes: I was watching this episode with my boyfriend, and every time I watch the show he asks who my favorite is. The thing with this season is, I take a liking to a designer, then they create an absolutely horrid outfit. So, I get myself a new set of pom-poms, and then the new designer I fancy lets me down the following episode. I cannot win yet. Even last season, I was rooting for Jillian from like week 2. So, overall thoughts? Stella and Suede are ANNOYING, and I have no stand-out stars. Leanne, Kelli, Jerrell. Those are this week's. Oh, and a kudos to Terri. You go crazy-patterned girl.

-Kayleigh

Happy belated birthday to Tim 'the silver fox' Gunn!!

Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Well hmm...

Hey guys, sorry it's taken me so long to post. I have been in Germany for the past week or so, and just got the opportunity to watch the second episode.

My thoughts are still very much the same that this season is going to be very different from past seasons. I feel like so many of these designers, if not all of them, are little lost sheep around what is expected of them, and their outcomes. This is project runway, you've had 4 seasons to figure out your expectations! And jeez, Stella, stop complaining EVERY EPISODE. And Suede, dude... you gotta stop talking in the third person. It's driving me insane.

So, the green episode. The models had to pick out the fabric, so everything was by far a hot mess (which, by the way, did you hear Tim Gunn use that term?? He must be hanging out with Christian, which makes me smile). I think this challenge would have been drastically different and more successful if the designers picked out the fabric (no one would have picked that horrid brown blahh), but c'est la vie. So basically, everyone's dress was way too short (thanks models), and it was once again down to the wire.

I feel like every runway show there are one or two "what the...?" outfits that don the runway. Last week it was Blayne and Korto, and this week it was Jerell and Korto (umm... get the hint). And then on top of that, there are only 2 or 3 good outfits! These designers need to STEP IT UP.

Pumped on Natalie Portman though, she's awesome and adorable. And here's the link to her upcoming shoe line, I think it launches January 15.

I, once again, will be out of town for this week's episode, but will update as soon as I watch.

Episode 2

Designer: Blayne

Casey: I have a feeling a lot of my comments on the designs this week are gonna be similar. i really have yet to be wowed. Which is what usually happens in the beginning of each season. Give me a few more eps and i will be invested.
the positive on this one is for common design i am slightly surprised as the volume of the asymmetric top it was unexpected, which is good. that being said i still do not like asymmetric clothing, i am with natalie on this one. i just can't get into asymmetric outfits, one sleeve just bugs me. and i'm not feeling this color.

Kayleigh: I'm with Casey wholeheartedly on this one. My list of designers I'm really "into" this season is yet to be solid, and I really wasn't all that impressed by any design. I will say that this one was slightly better than a lot of them, and I actually really liked the way he worked the black fabric in. Overall though...asymmetrical clothes. Not a fan.

Designer Daniel (who is dating wesley the guy who got the boot this ep. how do people just meet each other and automatically become as bravo called them "an item"? i don't get the instantaneous relationship thing. maybe bravo is lying to me i dunno. nothing says romance like a room full of stressed people bitching about time and the constant tractor like roar of industrial machines, you know they were sneaking around to make out in the room with the irons trims, making eyes at each other over sergers.....random bravo gossip. end rant.)

Casey: about the dress. the fabric looks like a trash bag. the neck line is cute. but you can deff tell that the dress was quickly thrown together. the hem is wavy in the front and it needs a good pressing or steaming. that's what you get for making out instead of ironing...a sloppy looking dress.

Kayleigh: I thought this dress had a lot of potential. I am a sucker for a babydoll dress, and the neckline is adorable. I did realize a trend though, where the front of the dresses in this episode were much shorter in the front than they were in the back. Coincidence or crappy shopping by the models? One may never know. And is this the guy who got his bed made in that little offshoot of a story before they left for Parsons? I was left lost and confused by that one.

Designer : Emily

Casey: i like the detail on the bodice. but it is way to short. don't get me wrong i like a leggy dress or skirt. but this is ridiculous on the runway they were centimeters away from a crotch shot. it looks like it needs stretched out on both ends the top looks oddly low on her, and it needs a few inches on the skirt as well. it looks like is she were to stand any straighter that would be a high waisted skirt more than a tube dress. if the bodice and the skirt got the needed length added it could have been cute.

Kayleigh: I agree, this dress is... insanely short. But this designer once again hasn't truly let me down, so I'm sticking with her as one of my favorites. I think she did what she could have with the resources she was given, and she really did make the dress more than just a solid color and embellish later (which caused a lot of trouble for other designers). She used what she had pretty well (except seriously, get the girl a pair of tights or something).

Designer: Jerell

Casey: Ugh. wow. sooo this is not flattering. the top is supposed to be sexy but makes the model's boobs look saggy.the top is loose. the fuzz on the skirt is so unappealing.the pattern on the sides of the skirt might have been cute. but I'm not sure if its the model who has thrown her hip out of the socket in this pose or if the dress makes her look like she has tumor ...

Kayleigh: I think this dress is absolutely terrible. It's like a country-western stripper outfit from the 1960's. And I thought from the model's shopping alone that he had some potential-- she got him accessories to design the garment after! Peacock feathers, one of my favorites. One would have thought he could have created something a little more, ahem, classy.

Designer: Jennifer

Casey: eh. i wouldn't mind the top half of the dress if it fit the model. drapey is one thing but this is just too big on her. I don't like the skirt, i don't like the placement of the grey on the skirt and the hem, it looks like there are random chunks missing in it.

Kayleigh: Syracuse is letting me down. It looks very much like a dress you'd find at forever 21-- cute ideas but when you try it on it looks awful. I don't think she should have done too much with the jersey, once you layer it too much it looks weighty and just not right. Kind of raggedy.

Designer: Joe
Casey: this fabric killed so many designers chances. it puckers and shows all the mistakes sooooo badly. the dress looks sloppy bc the fabric wrinkles so much. i don't like the random key hole in the middle of the dress. it's a simple design but it would look better if the fabric was cleaned up (steamed and such), but it was good he stuck to simple with this fabric look at the trouble it made with simple lines. he at least knew that if he pushed the fabric with more diverse lines or shapes it would just looked like a hot mess.

Kayleigh: Why did so many models pick this fabric?? I genuinely felt bad for the designers. But Joe actually did a decent job with this one. He apparently knew how to use it, and made a decent dress out of it. Am I personally a fan? No. But it was the best out of the uses of that fabric, that's for sure.

Designer: Keith
Casey: this silhouette was not appealing. it looks like a stage curtain and it bugs me. it looks like there should be a string to pull to raise and lower the hem. the color of the fabric looks great with her skin tone though.

Kayleigh: I actually like the bunching of the skirt, but it doesn't work well at all with the length that he chose. Again, too short, but the color and ideas are pretty good.

Designer:Kelli
Casey: this looks like a bad barbie dress. once again i don't like asymmetry. it look like she cut the neckline wrong and just tries to patch it up last minute. that green tealish color looks like toothpaste.

Kayleigh: I hatedddd this one. When I first saw the model on the runway, I thought she had a boob popping out. Again, not a fan of asymmetry, but if you're going to do it don't do it slightly- it bothered the hell out of me. And the green? Yuck.

Designer: Kenley
Casey: This is what i looks like when you use satin and similar fabrics correctly. sleek. classy. chic. I personally do not like the neck ruffle thing, but the dress is really well made. the colors are great on the model.

Kayleigh: Yay! An actual dress!! I'm with Casey, I'm not too into the neckline (I think it limits the people who can wear it, and obviously short hair or and up-do is a must), but plus it makes it almost too dressy? It looks great on the model though. But anyways, one of the best, by far. Again, she's in my top picks still.

Designer: Korto
Casey: this kills me. besides asymmetry i also really dislike when clothing has seams showing like this. it bugs me to no end. it looks inside out. when you are stitching a garment you put it together inside out like this, when you are done piecing it together and trim your seam allowances you flip it back the right way. so clothing like this always looks unfinished to me. and she even left the seam allowance which created those terrible hip wing things. if she trimmed the seam allowances and flipped this the other way i bet it would be super cute.

Kayleigh: Rocket ship? I didn't like her last design, and I don't like this one.

Designer: Leanne
Casey: this fabric is so bad. no matter what dress it is used in. it just doesn't work. she tried these odd loopy circle bits. she had way to many ideas and tried to Frankenstein them into one dress. didn't work here either.

Kayleigh: I like Leanne, and I think she has some good ideas, but in this instance it was a bad combination with those and the fabric her model provided her with. And did you see the look on the model's face when the judges asked her about it? I would have put my scissors in her back for daring to bad talk me when she picked out the horrid material.

Designer: Stella
Casey: once again. i can't get with the asymmetry. the models picked some of the most unappealing fabrics. they went to the prom section and all got the same stuff basically.

Kayleigh: Stella kills me. I think it's only a matter of time before she's off, because now it's clear that she doesn't like working outside of her comfort zone. Looking forward to the next tight, short dress she makes next week. And the endless rants that she's not working with leather.

Designer: Suede
Casey: props for the interesting way he pieced together the top here. it really creates some interesting depth in the piece, because of the length of the waist and the bias cut of all the strips the bodice fits kinda loose and a little odd. i don't like the silhouette, the combo of the dropped waist line and the mini circle skirt and tutu thing.. it doesn't float my boat.

Kayleigh: I tried to get into this one, but I just don't think I can do it. The top was a really cool idea, and he pulled it off pretty well, but overall it just doesn't look right to me. Kudos for winning the challenge, but seriously the pickings were slim. I do think Suede's going to pull out some surprises later on this season though. I have a funny feeling about him.

Designer: Terri
Casey: i like the navy. the dress fits well. I'm not a big ruffley boob fan. but far better than some of the other outfits. But what the heck is the model doing here? she needs to practice her skinnyhunchedhighfashionamericasnexttopmodelposes more. and what is that look on her face?!

Kayleigh: I actually really enjoyed this dress. The color, the silhouette... I think it should have been in the top designs. It's one of the most wearable of any of them.

Designer: Wesley
Casey: He tried to ruche, pleat, gather, drape, and altered seams. YOU CAN NOT DO THIS WITH THIS KIND OF FABRIC. not well, and not without time and patience which was running low for everyone on this challenge. He figured out all of this to late tried to alter, take out, and restitch seams to fix the fit. YOU CAN'T DO THIS WITHOUT EVERYONE OF THESE STEPS READING LIKE A ROADMAP OF DETOURS AND OOOOPS'. this fabric did not fair well for anyone.

Kayleigh: This is just bad. I did feel bad for him though. .

"My husband's leathahhhh, my kids came out of me leathahhh..."

So they had to use green (environmentally not color) fabric. and the big twist was that the model's had to shop for the fabric. eeek. those poor designers. it was a twist that's for sure, but i think the outfits and this episode really ended up lacking because of it. a lot of the people had the same fabric most notably the bronzey satin. i'm sad to see wesley go i really think he was gonna have some solid designs to show. but it's well known that satin is not nice to work with, you can't seam rip, you can't force the fabric, it will show every ooops and imperfection. every seam must be perfect, it won't give if it's fitted too tightly, and it doesn't drape well if it is too loose. the lines need to precise, smooth, and clean.

the models got more airtime which was nice, the last time they really got into showing the models was the first season, like when they had the bathing suit party, and that sketchy dude was hitting on Austin's model, he made a fool of himself until he found out on camera that she was only 15. i believe he said something classy around the lines of ...i should probably stop staring at her ass than. and let's not forget Morganza, hahah she went out drinking in her dress before they had to show it on the runway, the next morning she had demolished it. ooops.

when the models were shopping they weren't sure of what they were doing, no clue how much was needed, what colors worked, and what fabrics would even work for a cocktail dress. it was a mess.

Hey stella of course every episode won't revolve around leather. put on your big girl panties and deal with it. blayne making the leather jokes was funny. speaking of leather... blayne if you do not stop tanning your skin will turn into leather. and let's not forget he compared heidi to darth vader...what?!.

note to designers this has worried me and it's only the second episode. you are going to hurt a model. we had blayne sewing his model into his clothes, it's one think if your rushed and it is a side seam or something. but the man was sewing the crotch seam! not good. and tonight stella was steaming the dress when the model was in it. They are not dress forms guys, THEY WILL FEEL PAIN! i cringed when i saw the steamer thing.( anyone reading this from the shop in fredonia may recall the freak steamer explosion of 2003, needless to say we are a bit jumpy around those machines)

on the positive side. there have not been any designers who in the first few episodes say something like. i don't know what to do guys, i have never draped, or how do you thread this machine? it kills me. how did they get on the show if they don't know how to load an industrial sewing machine or serger! and the i don't know how to drape thing, how the heck did you plan on creating you patterns let alone any garments in such little time, you don't get to buy patterns here, you DESIGN your own. the poor people who auditioned and didn't make it and are watching some one being taught how to drape an outfit, or cautiously sewing a straight line on an industrial machine like they are 15 and driving dad's Ferrari 250 California Spyder for the first time, or spitting on fabric bc they don't use a fabric notcher. ( words can not explain my reaction when i saw that last season, i am still coping) and i am gonna stop that rant right now. ha. sorry

over all. design wise. meh. but Natalie Portman is the sweetest. more on the outfits later.

Challenge 1 Runway

So here's the part where we will go through each outfit on the runway each week, and let it all out.

Challenge 1:

Designer: Kenley
Medium: Dodgeball and lawnchair

Kayleigh: To me, I thought this dress was as classy as it could have been without using fabric, or in many cases, tablecloth. I think the dodgeball was used really well too.

Casey: i really like the dodgeball top. this fits her really well and is simplistic but fun and interesting to look at at the same time. cute shoes!

Designer: Terri
Medium: Mopheads and Tablecoth

Kayleigh: I thought the top was really interesting and innovative, but the bottom looked pretty bad to me. Also, I thought the top DEFINITELY needed more work to be considered done, but with the materials I think she pulled it off decently.

Casey: this had great potential to go some where, but wasn't taken nearly as far as it could have. but hey one day what are you gonna do? the top has a crocheted kinda feel which i think would have been prettier if the braids weren't so bulky . some more delicate braids on top and a skirt made out of the bulkier braids would have been awesome.

Designer: Daniel
Medium: Plastic Cups

Kayleigh: I really liked this one. As far as originality is concerned, I thought it was one of the best. Did you guys see how he put it on the model though? It was a plastic cocoon he opened up and made her run into. So funny, but well done.

Casey:this is what the challenge was about. plastic cups way to be. its minimalistic and it works. classy and innovative.

Designer: Blayne
Medium: ?? mops and things...

Kayleigh: There were comments made by Michael Kors that she looked like she was wearing a diaper, and Heidi Klum that she looked like a trashy playboy bunny. I personally think she looks like a college girl who wanted to make a slutty skunk costume for haloween, and only had big-lots to make it happen. This was bad.

Casey:the character flower from Bambi...if she fell onto hard times in the forest and grew up into a misguided slightly cracked out hussy.

Designer: Emily
Materials: Tablecloth, baloons, rubber balls, ...

Kayleigh: This design didn't really stand out for me, though I thought it was on the better side of the lot. I liked the usage of the baloons and balls and such, but the bottom line is is that 3/4 of the dress is made out of fabric. Eh.

Casey:the white part bores me. nice color contrast. i couldn't put it in better a better word than, eh.

Designer: Jennifer
Materials: Paper Towels

Kayleigh: A fellow Syracusian! I'm not sure if I'm rooting for her yet, though I think if I could push her along so that Tim Gunn comes to Syracuse I certainly would. This was a pretty impressive dress considering it was made out of paper towels. The lipstick kisses didn't really fly too well with me, but from what we've seen of her portfolio she seems to have a consistent girly-ness to her so I guess it was a good application of her personal style.

Casey: the white still does nothing for me. but at least the shape and details of the skirts are fun. and solid fit for paper towels. it looks well made and more stable than i would think the paper would allow.

Designer: Jerell
Medium: Tablecloth, lawnchair, cocktail umbrellas

Kayleigh: I didn't mind this one, though I thought it was still kind of cheating with using all of the fabric. But the umbrella are a nice touch. I think maybe he should have made the top out of those alone, but it worked.

Casey: i think he could have lost the circle things at the neckline. the pattern with the lawn chair is awesome on its own. i don't think the top and bottom look like they belong together. they look like they are from two completely diff outfits and were quickly cut and pasted together. the style, textures, and colors don't go well together. the bottom takes away from the style of the top and does not create a nice contrast, if contrast was what he was going for.

Designer: Jerry
Materials: Tablecloths.

Kayleigh: ...Do we really need to say anything about this one? Even the model doesn't look slightly happy to be in it. Not only did he wimp out by simply using fabric-like materials, but he did a very poor job using them. Between the incredibly unflattering coat, the nowhere-near-finished dress underneath, and the fugly yellow dishwashing gloves.... she looks straight out of a horror film. Needless to say, I think the judges truly eliminated the worst design in this first run.

Casey: worst.

Designer: Joe
Materials: Pasta and oven mits

Kayleigh: Okay, so this one was creative... but seriously, I think the choice of oven mit was a bit tacky. Not sure if you can tell, but all those little designs on the top are tomatoes. Yep. And the skirt... pasta. This design may have brought out the lil Italian in Jerry, but to me it was more reminiscent of a kindergarten project. At least he pulled it off to get by though. Definitely better than some.

Casey: another example of a good try but no follow through. i like this one bc it has pattern which creates more interest than white table clothes. the colors might not be the prettiest. and i don't necessarily like the patterns together.but, i agree with kayleigh better than some.

Designer: Keith
Medium: Tablecloth

Kayleigh: "Hi! I'm a tablecloth!!"

...but seriously, I'd wear it. Maybe not the best in terms of creativity or innovation, but pretty darn cute dress.

Casey- classy picnic. the cute easy way out.

Designer: Kelli
Medium: Vacuum-cleaner bags, coffee filters

Kayleigh: As soon as I saw Kelli dying and bleaching those vacuum-cleaner bags, she was my girl. I thought it looked beautiful, and I figured she'd probably win simply because she applied a second layer of grocery-store creativity and used actual products on the garment. My only criticism of the entire thing is that I'm not sold on the coffee-filter coconut-bra top thing she's got going on. The bags looked so beautiful, I would have continued them up to the neckline and used the coffee-filters as a sort of lace to embellish it. But yeah, love this one.

Casey: I really like this designer. i love any designer that rocks the dying process especially tie-dye esque stuff like this. i really like the muted earthy colors with the light blue. i love this dress from the waist down. but the coffee filters kill the happy on the dress. and the eyelet-ish details don't help they only negate the pretty more.

Designer: Korto
Medium: Tablecloth and fresh veggies

Kayleigh: ...personally, I hated this one. I thought it was cheap because of how much the design relied on tablecloth, I thought it was a pretty unflattering kimono-like dress, and I thought the fresh produce, though definitely innovative, was a horribleeee idea. There's a reason why no one else used fresh vegetables, Korto.

Casey: i don't like the shape of this at all. stiff , unflattering fullness and awkward on the body. the collar looks like a plant died around her neck, not pretty.

Designer: Leanne
Medium: Tablecloth, coffee filters, candy

Kayleigh: I thought this one was mediocre. And I think she looks like a giant meringue candy. It was very easy to read into this one "oh my gosh I didn't realize Tim Gunn would be upset at me using tablecloth... let me think of what I can add to this really quickly."

Casey- the candy gives a weird weight to the dress. im not impressed. if you are just gonna hot glue something on to tableclothes at least make it work with the composition of the dress, and at least make it an interesting pattern the white part looks like wolverine cut up a teddy bear.

Designer: Stella
Medium: Trash Bags

Kayleigh: "Hi, I'm wearing a roll of trash bags!"

This looks like Stella put absolutely no effort into her design. And frankly, she didn't, because she put too much energy complaining to everyone that she purchased a bad kind of trash bag. The only saving grace that she had was that the design was very similar to the outfit she was wearing herself at the runway show, and that it coincides with her personal designs. But yeah, this one was rightfully on the chopping block. I'm looking forward to seeing if she is capable of thinking outside of her 'leather and denim' for this season.

Casey- you spent 4 dollars on 50 feet of garbage bags and were shocked when it was flimsy? come on. she gave up and put forth no effort and it shows. the most positive thing i have about this is it didn't fall off the model and she wasn't naked. this is project runway bring your A game people!

Designer: Suede
Medium: Tablecloth and doggie bags

Kayleigh: hmmm. Another "oh crap I cant just use tablecloths?! Let's just attach all these dog-poop bags so it's a cross between a picnic table and a hula skirt" dress.

Casey- easy shape. easy fabric. quick glue job. "it was not broughten."

Designer: Wesley
Medium: Tablecloth, flyswatter, and... some other plastic thingys.

Kayleigh: Again, a mediocre tablecloth dress. But I did think the interesting use of the plastic as embellishments worked very well and gave it a bit more of an edge than some of the more plain tablecloth dresses. And maybe Jerry can learn from Wesley what kind of yellow gloves can work with an outfit (Though please note that I am not saying anyone should ever wear yellow gloves. Ever. For any reason.)

Casey: this dress makes me think of mr. clean. the texture adds some interest. not enough. yawn.

"i design fo' people who come to me... hookahz pimpz ..."

this cast is all over the place, lots of loud personalities. I am not attached to anyone yet though the problem with the first few eps is always that there are so many contestants, you only get a short snippet of each. as time goes on and niceties are dropped, sleep is lost, things get more interesting. There were a few things that stuck out to me in the first episode. First off come on guys really being shocked that table clothes and trash bags aren't original. PAH-LeASe! Have you watched this show?! you guys are supposed to be creative minds, you all knew that there was gonna be an unconventional challenge like this! way to drop the ball. Tim used the word slackers and i agree. i am still shocked you guys really thought that. lame. i like to think of what i would have done in each challenge when i watch these i was thinking some thing like the cupcake baking wrappers. that could be a sweet textured skirt. i sew, I'm a "designer" but i am in no way up to finishing these projects in the crazy time constraints given to these guys. my draping final in college was project runway themed. semi formal dresses in the few hours of class time we had in our finals week... design, drape, pattern, shop fabric, cut, stitch, prep, fit, and finish from scratch. i wanted impale myself on a seam ripper i got so stressed over it. i respect them a lot. but still feel the majority of them dropped the ball on this one design wise.

a lot of the people this season are already settled in and pretty well know in the fashy world. part of me wishes there were more students and designers. people who are younger and still relatively fresh in the business, people who need this more just to get their foot in the door.

other things that stuck out to me tonight. Blayne, the name kills me. as did his depends-esque outfit. and as for girlicious. in 10 mins the guy's is already trying to force feed us bad catch phrases. ugh. Suede. really is that your name or did you just nickname yourself? maybe i should label myself as a fabric as well, and at least choose a smooth sounding one like chiffon or something of the like. the rocker chick was funny in the beginning with her hookah quote.and as for the guy who got cut first, his outfit looked like a hazmat suit. also the designer Joe looks a lot like the horror actor tom savini you would know him from Dawn of the dead and dusk till dawn as this guy.

Our next posts are going to be more about the individual outfits in the episode. i am looking forward to the rest of the season.

-Charmeuse (much smoother sounding than suede)
