Out With A Bang

So as you all know, tonight was the season premier of Season 5 of Project Runway, and from the beginning I think this season will be veryyyy different from any other season, at least within the past couple.

For one thing, the designers themselves were a very interesting bunch to say the least. We already found ourselves in the presence of a wannabe Christian ("girlicious" Blayne from Washington) as well as their stereotyped "rock" designer (Stella), "raw" designer (Daniel), and "dangerously combustible" designer, Suede, who truly enjoys speaking in the third person (and using a vocabulary that includes the word "whackadoodle").

From just the introductions and the brief look at the portfolios, I immediately found Kelli, Kenley (who's name I just cant into because of this), Leane, Wesley, Keith, and Emily to be the ones I admired the most. I know that's a lot, but bear with me. I need time to bond with my characters, or save myself from loyalty before they put out a hideous outfit or say something dumb. It's a process, really.

So, on to the first challenge. They repeated a challenge that was completed in Season One, where each designer had a budget of $75 to shop at a grocery store and make an "innovative" outfit. And, surprisingly enough, not only did almost every designer grab tablecloths, but almost every designer was surprised that almost every designer grabbed tablecloths (um... it's basically fabric, and by far the easiest way out. And you think you're a genius because you thought of it??) As usual, Tim Gunn ranted about it and then left. As usual, the models came in and there were issues, and as usual, one designer was 'frustrated' at her lack of resources because she picked them out herself and they weren't working (did you expect to get sympathy or a second run to the store?) But overall, I think the worst design was thankfully eliminated (seriously... a white coat with yellow rubber gloves? I was frankly creeped by the designer from then on anyway), and we're off to a good start. There are a lot of dynamic designers and design ethic so I think that will make for a very entertaining season.
