so tomorrow is a big night for people who enjoy clothing, sarcasm, design, and catch phrases. Season 5 of project runways starts ( this is the last season on bravo in NYC before the big move to Lifetime which will be filmed in LA). and since this blog kind of has a clothes horse theme, you will be hearing lots about this show, and i wanted to give a quick review (with snarky comments and pictures)to anyone who might read this and be unfamiliar with this piece of reality TV gold
A group of designers from many different locations, back rounds, and styles come together armed with egos and sharpened Ginghers at Parsons school for design. there have been everything from fashion to costume designers. in past seasons (costumers have made it far but have yet to win a season, i think the costumers are slightly under appreciated at times on the show...i have a theory that Nina or Kors were bullied by costumers in their youth and now are a bit biased.) any way. self taught home sewing moms to pretty well known couture designers. stitching hippies and punk rockers with neck tatts. the contestants are slowly eliminated through challenges where they must create a look from scratch usually with specific limits in budget, time, and themes. The final group of designers show a collection at Fashion Week in Bryant Park ( kind of a big deal) and the the winner gets some cash, a car, and quality time with Tim Gunn .
The people who decide the fate of these hopefuls are a quirky crew themselves. We have Heidi Klum well known super model and baby making machine. she has been preggers in 85% of the shows in the last 5 years, she has 3 babies, she and seal are going for six. wow. and the woman does it all in heels and mini skirts ! she is a she-ro of mine.
We also have Nina Garcia editor of Elle magazine for now, but soon to switch over to Marie Claire. Also, there is Michael Kors, fashion designer only ever seen in jeans and a black T and blazer. the only thing that changes is the mans coloring, in seasons past he has gone a little tan crazy ....
Last but certainly not least we have Mr. Tim Gunn. The man is a style guru. always perfectly starched and always on point. Seriously all they have to do is follow the man's advice and you are set. Most commonly known for his catch phrases make it work, this worries me, and carry on. One day i would like to co host a show with him on the style network. Or maybe a reality TV show where he christian and i live in NYC. Tim and i frolic in the fashion district. i starch his shirts, christian gets Tim to experiment with new hair products and every episode ends in a mini monologue by Tim in which he gives some fashion or styling tip that can also double as some kind of deep life lesson.
Finally I will close this ridiculously long post with some videos... the commercial for the new season. and a great SNL skit that is on point.
